Criticisms may have played part in Tendulkar's retirement: Gavaskar to NDTV

Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on
Sunday, told NDTV that he feels criticism
may have played a role in making Sachin
Tendulkar retire from ODI cricket.
The legendary batsman earlier in the day,
quit the 50-over format after a glorious
career spanning 23 years. With recent
form not reflecting the astounding
numbers and records against his name,
debate and discussions on Tendulkar's
retirement began to flow freely,
especially in the light of India's
humiliating losses to England at home. "I
think he really cares for Indian cricket.
May be whatever he saw, read and heard
might have prompted him to make a call.
But I feel, he knows his body well," said
Gavaskar.
Critics have mentioned in the past that
Tendulkar should make way for newer
players and that his current form should
not warrant a place for him in the playing
XI. Tendulkar however did finish his
innings in ODIs with a record 49
centuries. "We are looking too far ahead.
If he plays the next four Tests, that will
take him to 198 and the next two tests
will be later in the next year. It's almost
a year down the road."
Gavaskar concluded by saying that while
Tendulkar has already cut down his
appearences in ODIs, his retirement will
be a big loss to the team.
